New Transition to Work program for young school leavers launched

A new Transition to Work program aimed at getting young people jobs will be officially launched in Beenleigh today, 7 September.

Transition to Work (TTW) is a yourtown program providing young people with intensive, pre-employment support to improve their work readiness and help them find work, education or training opportunities.

Delivered in partnership with the Federal Department of Employment, it’s aimed at adolescents aged 15-21, particularly young school leavers.

yourtown is operating the program across 12 regions across Australia, including South East Brisbane encompassing Beenleigh, Logan Central, Kingston and Capalaba. The program started in April 2016.

According to CEO Tracy Adams the goal is to help young people improve their chances of getting a job and find their place in the community.

 “TTW is really about getting back to the basics of supporting young people to get a job and keep a job through delivering practical interventions that help young people understand the workplace. This includes developing skills, attitudes and behaviour expected by an employer,” Ms Adams said.

“Of those in the program in the South East Brisbane region to date, more than half have been placed into employment or returned to full-time education or training. That is 58 have got jobs and 41 have reengaged with education or training.”

According to yourtown Youth Worker Jaxon Greening, the most important outcome of the program is seeing the change it can make in how young people see themselves.

“When you see their eyes light up from realising what they can truly achieve – it’s amazing. They can go from not thinking they had a future to believing in themselves and knowing anything is possible,” he said.
