Port Pirie and yourtown are racing for success!

By: yourtown 27 Feb 2017 Media Releases

yourtown with the generous support of the Port Pirie community will again race for success at the annual yourtown Charity Trots Night tomorrow, Friday 24 February.

For more than 10 years, yourtown (formerly BoysTown) has been working with the Port Pirie community to help young people learn skills, become great parents and live safe, happy lives.

According to yourtown CEO Tracy Adams the success of programs offered in Port Pirie is very much due to the unwavering support of the community.

“Each year, we connect with close to 250 young people and families in Port Pirie through our work enterprises, parenting programs and education re-engagement programs,” Ms Adams said.

“Our work enterprises and parenting programs are mostly funded by the community through our Art Union and generous donor support that includes the funds raised at the Port Pirie Charity Trots Night run in our honour.

“We realise that the support of the local community, its businesses and generous supporters like the Port Pirie Harness Racing Club is crucial to the continued success of our programs.

“This year’s charity race night will not only help provide valuable resources for our local services but demonstrates that it’s together and by association that we continue to work hard to provide opportunities for the young people of Port Pirie.”

Port Pirie’s yourtown Manager John Waters said yourtown was pleased to introduce a new youth focused pre-employment program to the region since last year’s race.

“With the support of the Federal Government, we introduced the Transition to Work (TTW) program. TTW is about getting back to the basics of supporting young people to get a job and keep a job through delivering practical interventions that help young people understand the workplace. This includes developing skills, attitudes and behaviour expected by an employer,” he said.

“We estimate that more than 400 local young people will benefit from TTW over the next 4 years.”
