A father’s perspective

Mums, dads and kids from BoysTown’s Parenting Programs had a musical treat recently when Play School presenter and actor Jay Laga’aia dropped into our Kingston site.

READ.PLAY.LEARN.

Jay’s visit was part of his Up Close and Personal workshop tour showcasing the benefits of education, including literacy and language in a culturally diverse community.

Jay has plenty experience engaging with children of all ages, he has eight of his own! His personal journey as a parent and educator helps inform his workshop.

The session included plenty of sing-a-long favourites like the Play School theme and ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’, which every kid and parent in the room sang or enthusiastically ‘twinkled’.

Jay emphasised the importance of parents taking the time to read their children stories, encouraging kids to read and improve their literacy.

It’s important to get involved. If you’re not prepared to participate with your kids you can’t expect your kids to want to participate. Jay Laga’aia

Children were given books to take home and enjoy with their parents.

Jay’s visit to BoysTown was supported by the Queensland Government’s Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs.
