A positive growing experience

A 12 month traineeship at yourtown has made a huge difference to Maddy's life.

IN MADDY'S WORDS...

Early in 2014 I was handed a survey to fill out which asked for my interests and hobbies. Five months after completing it and not having thought any more about it, I got a call from my now mentor, Cassie, asking if I would be interested in a Business Administration Traineeship at BoysTown. Of course, I said yes!

I’d never had a job before so I didn’t know what to expect when I started here. Without a doubt, my experience with BoysTown has been a positive and memorable one.

The things I’ve learnt whilst at BoysTown seem endless. Not only have my skills and knowledge grown but I have grown as a person too. I was very shy when I first started but the support and encouragement from my supervisor and teammates has been amazing. I feel more confident now, particularly when communicating with my teammates and other colleagues. I've improved my computer knowledge and excelled in my ability to use a variety of different software programs.

Here’s just some of the things I’ve learnt during my time here:

• Scheduling meetings and booking meeting rooms
• Taking minutes and notes
• Data entry of paper-based surveys and forms
• Editing PowerPoint presentations
• Completing monthly data reports
• Researching information online using websites, eBooks and articles
• Writing and editing a published information resource for parents
• Conducting administrative tasks
• Regularly participating in team meetings
• Editing and re-formatting excel databases
• Using a range of different software packages
• Understanding and adhering to workplace health and safety procedures

BoysTown provided me with many opportunities including writing and editing a Hot Topic for the Kids Helpline website which will be very helpful for my future writing career. The chance to do something I really enjoy and learn at the same time was fantastic.
