Building more than a house
BoysTown’s Yarrabilba project takes disadvantaged youth and long-term unemployed and gives them practical, hands-on experience in the construction industry building a house.
TRAINING. SUPPORT. EMPLOYMENT
At our second ‘Build and Sell’ home with Lend Lease, construction is progressing brilliantly with the slab laid, the frame up and windows installed.
Up to four young people at any one time are working alongside qualified trainers on the brand new four bedroom house. They are developing work skills related to all aspects of the build from fencing the block through to hanging the front door.
I wanted to learn new skills and it has been really great watching the house come together. Luke Harvey, project participant
We hope this project is as successful as our first home build where fourteen young people received paid employment while learning practical skills. This included five school-based apprentices, some of whom continue to work on this new house.
“We are really proud of the project. It is a wonderful opportunity for BoysTown and Lend Lease. We hope we can move it to other developments," said Rob Moore, Lend Lease Regional Development Manager.
BoysTown is now finalising the purchase of land for a third home at Yarrabilba which should break ground in July.
