Coming together to celebrate

By: yourtown 09 Jul 2015 BoysTown

We’ve been busy this week at yourtown getting involved with our local NAIDOC community celebrations.

IT’S NAIDOC WEEK!

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our Indigenous clients in Kingston held a smoking ceremony to thank all the staff supporting and working with them. Colourful totem poles were built and native plants were burnt to produce smoke to cleanse and ward off bad spirits.

We also supported NAIDOC events in Redlands, Logan and Nudgee. In Logan, we were in charge of the BBQ and cooked over 70kg of sausages! Our Youth Engagement Program (YEP) and the Starfish Program clients were also there lending a helping hand. It was great to see a large turnout in support of our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Fast fact… NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. :)

Wherever you are, you can get involved in NAIDOC Week activities. Just take a look at the local NAIDOC events calendar to find out what’s happening.

We’d love to hear how you celebrated NAIDOC week! Leave us a comment below.
