Coping with exam stress

By: yourtown 14 Oct 2014 Kids Helpline

Many teenagers are facing their end of year exams at the moment, which can mean stress for students and those who live with them.

WE CARE. WE LISTEN.

Stress is a natural response to pressure and a small amount of pressure can be useful to keep young people focussed during exam time.

For some students though, it becomes too stressful and then exam preparation and study seem impossible. But there are ways parents can help.

Kids Helpline has some advice to help your child cope with exam stress:

  1. Help them develop a study schedule, with a clear realistic plan for each session
  2. Encourage them to stick to a routine of going to bed at a reasonable time, eating regularly and making time to have fun and exercise.
  3. Help them to cut back on coffee or any other stimulants they may be using, as these can increase agitation. Encourage them to drink lots of water instead.
  4. Avoid junk food if possible and encourage them to eat fresh fruit, veggies, cereals, grains, nuts and protein - they are all good for the brain and blood sugar levels.
  5. Try not to nag as they may be feeling a lot of pressure already. It helps to stay calm and offer support – perhaps offer to record their favourite TV program to watch later or sit and have a chat.
Let your teen know you will help them no matter what and, although naturally you want them to do well, whatever their results you will always love and support them. Reassure them that there are other important things in life too and this is only part of the story. There is life after exams!
