Giving young people a chance

By: yourtown 21 Jul 2014 BoysTown

The young people we work with come from tough backgrounds, it is not always an easy road but someone has to give them a chance.

TRAINING. SUPPORT. EMPLOYMENT

They face many issues which may include limited literacy and numeracy skills, mental health concerns drug and alcohol use, abuse, financial problems and homelessness.

When Jack* came to BoysTown he was couch surfing or living on the streets.

We got the 21 year old somewhere permanent to stay, a position in one of our warehouse enterprises and he was a standout.

He gained his forklift licence and had the initiative to ask for a job. His eventual employer wasn’t considering putting someone on but Jack’s enthusiasm made him reconsider.

Twelve months on Jack is still happily at work and saving up to buy his first car.

I am definitely a lot happier, very happy, since getting my job. I just got sick of being where I was and I wanted to get a job and hang onto it so I came to BoysTown. Jack

At BoysTown we never give up. We persevere and stand by young people like Jack as they change their lives and achieve their dreams.

Our experience has demonstrated that we can make a real difference by taking the time to work with young people step by step, addressing each individual challenge to help them create a new and positive future.
