Helping children heal
Our Expressive Therapy program is finding new, creative and effective responses to the most urgent needs of young people.
ART. MUSIC. PLAY.
BoysTown's Research Team has been evaluating the initiative over the last two years and today released a report on its findings.
Delivered at our Young Parent’s facility at Deception Bay and BoysTown’s Family Violence Refuge, the Expressive Therapy program is working with young children and their parents to explore and process their experiences of trauma, neglect and abuse through art, music and play.
Our research has found that participation in the program makes a positive impact on children’s emotional wellbeing and functioning, including reductions in aggressive behaviour, attention problems, sleep problems and anxious and depressed behaviour.
BoysTown provides an environment where children and families feel safe, confident and surrounded by caring professionals. This environment and our therapists' innovative approach allows children to play with as few limits as possible and ultimately to heal. Wendy Protheroe, Counselling Services General Manager.
If you would like to read the report, it is available from our website.
BoysTown is able to offer Expressive Therapy programs thanks to the support of the Margaret Pemberton Foundation.
