Home paves the way to permanent jobs

By: yourtown 16 Jul 2014 BoysTown

BoysTown unveiled its second home built in Yarrabilba today, as part of a project giving disadvantaged young people real skills and putting them on the path to permanent jobs.

TRAINING. SUPPORT. EMPLOYMENT

Four young people were working on the construction at any one time, rotating through a variety of jobs from carpentry to landscaping.

Our goal is to transition these young people into ongoing sustainable employment with other project contractors working in Yarrabilba.

Two of our construction team from this build are already earmarked for jobs on other construction projects in Brisbane.

I wanted to learn new skills and it has been really great watching the house come together. Luke Harvey, project participant

The unveiling was a chance to congratulate the young people on their hard work and to thank the partners that made it possible.

State Member for Waterford Michael Latter, Logan City Councillor Don Petersen and representatives from Lend Lease, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, and the Queensland Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs checked out the new home and met the young people they helped support.

We are hoping to help even more young people by furthering our commitment to social enterprise activities like this one, using any proceeds from the sale of this house to create further opportunities for employment.

A third house in Yarrabilba is already planned and construction is expected to start later this month.
