Young men encouraged to seek help

By: yourtown 30 Jul 2014 Kids Helpline

The majority of people in Australia who take their own lives are men - around 80 per cent. Sadly, at least five men commit suicide every day.

WE CARE. WE LISTEN.

These frightening statistics were revealed last night on SBS Insight’s episode Back from the Brink. You can read the transcript here.

Kids Helpline’s 2013 Overview reveals that the young men who need help the most are seeking it the least.

Last year, males made up just 18 per cent of all counselling sessions. Young males 19 to 25 contacted Kids Helpline just 298 times with suicide related concerns despite our counsellors assessing thoughts of suicide in around 25 counselling sessions each day.

Clearly it is crucial that young men understand that help is available, for themselves and their friends. Kids Helpline provides free and confidential support for all young people.

We want young men to know Kids Helpline is somewhere to turn if they're having a tough time. You don’t have to pretend everything is fine. If there's a problem, getting help is the first step to getting something done about it.

If young people want to talk to someone they can call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or use email or web counselling services. No issue is too big or small.

They can also visit the Hot Topics section on the Kids Helpline website for advice on a range of issues. We also offer advice for parents.
