Back to school – Bullying
Children are about to return to school across Australia and Kids Helpline knows that bullying may be an issue for some.
LISTEN. REASSURE. ACT.
The transition to high school is challenging. Research reveals that school related bullying reaches its peak in the final years of primary school where 32% of students are targeted.
It’s important we undertake preventative measures to stop it happening and also offer support to kids dealing with the problem.
Kids Helpline's top anti-bullying tips:
- Regularly talk to your child about their school life and about emerging issues. Encourage your child to talk about any bullying they may be experiencing
- Tell your child that bullying is not acceptable and that it is not their fault
- Reassure them that you will help them to stop the bullying
- Find out what, when and where it happened and if anyone was present, then contact the school and make sure a teacher is aware of the problem
- Work with school staff to develop ways to stop the bullying
- Help boost your child's confidence by encouraging them to join activities they are good at such as sports, arts or music
Keep communication open about all your child's experiences, and make sure they know you're available if things go wrong. Wendy Protheroe, Kids Helpline General Manager.
