Back to school – Study stress
Most Aussie kids are heading back to school next week and Kids Helpline is offering some tips for those who may be worried about performing in the classroom.
LISTEN. ENCOURAGE. REASSURE.
Study and education issues are among the top 10 reasons young people aged 5 to 18 contact Kids Helpline. Worry about managing school workload, feeling behind, and meeting their own, their parents’ or their school’s expectations can make some young people anxious.
Kids Helpline’s top tips for managing school stress:
- Encourage your child to stick to a routine of going to bed at a reasonable time, and still making time to have fun and exercise.
- Cut back on coffee or any other stimulants they may use as these can increase agitation; Suggest they drink lots of water instead.
- Urge them to eat, relax and allow time to themselves rather than carrying on with school work excessively.
- Suggest they reward themselves after achieving study goals. It could be something like watching their favourite TV show or going for a run.
Most importantly let your child know that you love them, no matter what and they can talk to you about anything. Wendy Protheroe, Kids Helpline General Manager.
