Helping young people find their voice

People often ask what it’s like to work as a Kids Helpline Counsellor. One of our counsellors shares their insights...

HELP. COUNSELLING. SUPPORT.

“There’s no such thing as an average day for a Kids Helpline counsellor. Each day brings new rewards and challenges, and new connections with vulnerable young people.

“I talk to young people on phone, web and email about a variety of issues. One contact may be experiencing bullying and feeling powerless and the next could be an ongoing client with whom I have built a supportive and trusting relationship with over a few years. I could be involved in a duty of care response to get help to an at-risk young person and then liaising with external services to work together to support a client.

I love that I am able to work with young people who want and need their voices to be heard and to help them realise their own strength and power. Kids Helpline Counsellor.

“It's a privilege to be trusted with their stories, given a window into their lives and to be with them through their most vulnerable moments. I love that I am able to learn and grow through working with these young people as part of a professionally qualified counselling team.”
