Spark it up!
Eight young BoysTown clients have had the chance to showcase their musical talents at the Logan Entertainment Centre in Brisbane.
LEARN. CREATE. EXPRESS
A special performance by the BoysTown Drumming Group kicked off the Spark It Up! iReprezent Cultural Festival. A large number of schools and community groups participated in the energetic night of cultural performance, song and dance.
The annual festival provides students with a platform to express themselves through their cultural heritage and an opportunity to positively interact with each other.
The young men involved had practised for seven weeks as part of a DrumBeat Program, facilitated by BoysTown.
Over the course of the program, they learnt drumming skills, communication skills, as well as building on their creativity and musical talent through rehearsals, jam sessions and improvisation.
For the Spark It Up performance, the BoysTown group performed "Big Jet Plane" by Angus and Julia Stone and a traditional Samoan song, "O le taualuga"- written about the last dance at Samoan gatherings.
From the smiles on their faces you can see that it was an engaging and rewarding experience.
This program is only one of the many ways we are helping young people to change their lives and create brighter futures.
